Aristophanes (ca. 257–180) produced authoritative editions in the fields of epic, lyric, and dramatic poetry. He advanced the use of punctuation in texts, added accents to his editions of Homer, and invented the system of colometry that still shapes our textual presentation of lyric poetry. His student Aristarchus (ca. 216–144) was famous for his detailed running commentaries on Homer, Hesiod, lyric poetry, tragedy and comedy, and (for the first time) a prose author, Herodotus. In opposition to the allegorizing interpretation of the Pergamene Crates, he followed the practice of ‘‘clarifying Homer from Homer,’’ meaning that he based his interpretations on the poet’s own usage.

The former are found in tragedy and the latter in comedy, but in epic, as in painting, Aristotle allows for a third possibility of persons just like ourselves.
