I had just finished reading Lois Keith’s collection of writings by disabled women, Mustn’t Grumble (1994), and offered to lend it to Hannah. This gesture turned out to be a strategic enabler of our research relationship because the book helped us to establish important common interests. Later that week I met Hannah at our agreed time and she was busy using a laptop computer. Her mood was grim, as she was having a great deal of trouble with the size of the keyboard and the small nipple mouse. She told me what a strain it was for her to write and how long everything seemed to take.

I noticed Hannah because she was never on her own; she was often with a man I later found out was her partner, or she was with a woman who pushed her wheelchair (described by Hannah as ‘my good egg personal assistant’), or she was with a group of children (who I later found out were hers, aged 4, 6, 8 and 10). Often she was with all of them. I really was unsure how I could approach her to discuss the possibility of involving her in research and I took a week to push myself to make the first contact.
