It is questions such as these that open the way into thinking about the use of self in practice, because they draw our attention to the inevitability that social work practice will always make demands on the self of the worker, and will therefore require the worker to think about how to handle their use of self. Novices soon discover that too much self-disclosure may weaken their perceived authority, although too little ‘give’ on their part may mean that they are perceived as remote and uninterested, and therefore less likely to establish a working rapport.

In so doing, service users are afforded a space to think about the behaviours being exhibited and how the relationships between the individuals concerned might be shaping them. Complementing the capacity to tolerate uncertainty and to ‘not know’ is the concept of curiosity (Cecchin 1987). When working with individuals and families, systemic practitioners invite all members of the system to express what it is they are curious about in a situation, in order to explore fully the difficulties being encountered and potentially to unearth aspects of the situation that had not been considered.

Understanding the internal working model associated with this attachment type enables social workers and substitute care givers to shape their interactions in ways that acknowledge the behaviours of the individual and offer alternative affirming, care-giving experiences. For younger children who have been forced to take on adult roles, prematurely adjusting to more appropriate adult/ child relationships can be challenging and the new roles are not always easily accepted. Relationship-based practitioners must be attentive to defensive dynamics and, while sensitive to their normality in most contexts, must resist colluding with them in their more dysfunctional forms.
