Apparently the original Benedictine altar was made from this marble, but was later chipped away by tourists for souvenirs. Local folklore held that a piece of Iona marble would protect the bearer from drowning, so it is perhaps not surprising that people wanted their own talismans. Even today, there are a multitude of tourist goodies made from Iona stone – and one wonders how much of Iona is scattered around the world in the form of souvenir pebbles!
